SpinXSW: Remote-Controlled Lighting By Phone...

The SpinXSW team have been hard at work for the past couple of weeks. Our first job was to prove that our vision was possible, by making a working proof-of-concept. We're going to be inviting members of the public to play with the lights in our light sculpture, via the motion sensors in their mobile phone. To do this, they'll navigate to a website that will turn their phone into a lighting controller.

Showing off the SpinXSW Technology Proof Of Concept

In the video -- taken of a live Skype chat, Erik, a member of our team in California, uses his phone to control a strip of test lights at Dave's place in Austin, Texas. Even with the added lag of the video-chat going there and back, the lights are pretty darn responsive -- almost real time! This is a super exciting result for us. It means that we've nailed the basic technology design, and those key elements are in place for us to build our interaction design on top of.

Moving forward, we'll turn our focus to building a deeper, more fun, multiplayer art game -- to play out in the lights of the sculpture.

Stay tuned for more developments!

Things are shaping up fast. Check out the SpinXSW Project Page for more information about the design.
