Lessons Learned

Be Realistic About What You Can Accomplish

As someone who is interested in a LOT of things, I am prone to wanting to do them all. A lesson that has been difficult for me, is to not over-extend myself. This was a real issue in the case of Tabletto. The software architecture is ambitious and powerful, and was quite involved to develop. The supporting eCommerce website, in and of itself, was a major project to pull off, even ignoring the content. The marketing and promotional content, will also be a major endeavor. The documentation for the software will be as well, not to mention the nurturing of online user community, and product support. Put simply, in the case of launching a new software product, the software itself, is easily less than 50% of the total work required.

As the huge scope of what I was attempting with Tabletto became apparent, I made the painfull decision that it was too large a scope for a first product, and put it down. I relegated it to 'experimental' status where it now stands -- somewhere between a working prototype, and a version 1 release. I decided to regroup, and attempt the effort over the longer term in phases, beginning with a less-technically-involved product. I suspect the need to keep a tight focus might be familiar realization for other startups.
